Kaizer Chiefs’ difficult run in the Betway Premiership continued on Tuesday evening after a narrow 1-0 loss to Richards Bay at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex.
The defeat marked Chiefs’ third consecutive league loss and their fourth setback in five matches across all competitions. For Richards Bay, however, the victory was a welcome breakthrough. The Natal Rich Boys had struggled for form in recent weeks and were still searching for their first win of 2026 before this result.
In the end, it was a single moment of quality in the second half that separated the two sides and handed the home crowd a night to remember.

Chiefs shuffle the pack after derby disappointment
Coming off a painful Soweto Derby defeat, Chiefs opted for several changes to his starting line-up. Six alterations were made as the Glamour Boys looked to freshen things up and rediscover momentum.
Nkanyiso Shinga made his debut for the club, while midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa returned after injury. Chiefs were also forced into a last-minute adjustment when defender Inacio Miguel picked up a knock during the warm-up, opening the door for Bradley Cross to step in.
Richards Bay, by contrast, stuck with the same team that played to a goalless draw against Orbit College in their previous outing.

Early chances but no breakthrough
The hosts started brightly and were the first to threaten. Just ten minutes into the match, Simphiwe Mcineka connected with a corner but his effort was diverted away from danger.
Richards Bay came even closer midway through the first half when Moses Mthembu unleashed a powerful free kick that forced Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma into action. The rebound sparked a frantic moment in the box, but Lundi Mahala dragged his shot wide despite the goal being at his mercy.
Chiefs had their moments too. Gastón Sirino helped launch a counter-attack that saw Dillon Solomons deliver a dangerous cross toward Ethan Chislett, only for defender Thembela Sikhakhane to step in at the crucial moment.
The visitors also squandered a promising chance shortly before half-time when Aden McCarthy rose to meet Sirino’s free kick but failed to guide his header on target.

Gumede strikes to settle the contest
The decisive moment arrived just after the hour mark.
Chiefs had pushed forward through substitute Mduduzi Shabalala, who slipped a clever pass to fellow substitute Glody Lilepo inside the box. However, Richards Bay recovered possession and quickly turned defence into attack.
The move ended with defender Simphiwe Barns sending a pass toward the edge of the area where Thulani Gumede controlled calmly. The midfielder cut onto his right foot and fired a precise shot beyond Bvuma to give the hosts the lead.
The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and placed Chiefs under immediate pressure.
Bvuma keeps Chiefs alive
Richards Bay nearly doubled their advantage in the dying minutes as Chiefs pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Bvuma was forced into a series of impressive saves late in the match. First he denied Knox Mutizwa after a rapid counter-attack before reacting quickly again to block Lindokuhle Zikhali’s follow-up header.
Even in stoppage time, the Chiefs goalkeeper continued to keep his side in the game with another double save, preventing Richards Bay from putting the result beyond doubt.
Despite those efforts, Chiefs could not find a way back into the match.
Pressure builds for Amakhosi
The result leaves Chiefs with plenty to think about as they attempt to steady their season. Consistency has been elusive, and the Glamour Boys now face growing pressure to halt their slide in the standings.
Their next opportunity to respond comes on 15 March when they host Durban City at FNB Stadium, a match that supporters will hope marks a turning point.
Richards Bay, meanwhile, will take confidence from their performance as they prepare for a tough challenge against league leaders Orlando Pirates next week.
For the Natal Rich Boys, the victory could be the spark they needed to reignite their campaign.
