Two years after making history at the Stade de France, the Springboks are heading back to the scene of their greatest triumph — and their coach, Rassie Erasmus, says it’s going to be “brutal.”
This weekend’s Test match against France marks the first time the world champions face Les Bleus since that unforgettable 2023 Rugby World Cup, where South Africa lifted their fourth title.
A Return Full Of Emotion
For Erasmus, this trip back to Paris is more than just another match. It’s a flood of memories — from the nerve-wracking one-point win over France in the quarterfinal to the tense final against New Zealand that sealed the Boks’ legend.
“I can’t even remember what we went through in terms of emotions then,” Erasmus said with a grin. “We’ve done well there in the past, but things change quickly. We’re really looking forward to a brutal clash.”
The highly-anticipated game headlines the Autumn Nations Series — a major warm-up ahead of the next Rugby World Cup pool draw in December.
France’s Fresh Start
On the other side, France are still nursing the scars of that home-World Cup heartbreak. Their coach, Fabien Galthie, was in charge back then too. But this time, his team looks completely different.
Only nine of the players who lost to South Africa remain in the squad. Injuries have taken out key stars, including their famous captain Antoine Dupont, who’s been sidelined since March. In his place, 23-year-old Nolann Le Garrec will wear the No 9 jersey.
Galthie says this new-look France team is still learning from the past. “Sometimes you have to look backwards to go forwards,” he explained.
Experience Meets Youth
While France rebuilds, South Africa arrives with battle-hardened experience — and a captain reaching a once-in-a-lifetime milestone. Siya Kolisi will play his 100th Test, leading a Springbok pack with an incredible 70 caps on average per player.
Erasmus says he’s proud of how the Boks have managed to stay competitive while introducing young talent of their own. “There’s quite some depth in what they are building, but we’re also trying to bring youngsters through,” he said.
France’s coach, meanwhile, praised his less-experienced players for stepping up. “We’re proud of their career paths and how far they’ve come,” Galthie shared.
Mutual Respect And Serious Intent
In a show of respect, Galthie described the Springboks as “maybe the best team ever.” Erasmus took the compliment with humility — and a warning.
“It’s nice of him to say that,” he replied. “But those guys facing us this weekend won’t believe it. They’ll go out there and try to beat us proper.”
Since their World Cup win, the Boks have only lost four of 23 games, with Erasmus evolving their style into a mix of power and flair. It’s a formula that’s earned global respect — and fear.
