Liverpool light up Anfield with five goal show

Liverpool delivered one of their most convincing performances of the season as they swept aside West Ham 5-2 at Anfield. Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring within five minutes, setting the tone for a rampant home display.

Virgil van Dijk doubled the lead with a towering header before Alexis Mac Allister added a third shortly before halftime.

West Ham twice tried to claw their way back through Tomas Soucek and Valentin Castellanos, but Liverpool always stayed in control. Cody Gakpo restored the cushion and a late Axel Disasi own goal wrapped up a statement win.

The result gives Liverpool a timely boost in their push for a Champions League spot as the season begins to tighten at the top.

Wolves shock Villa and avoid an unwanted record

Across the Midlands, Wolves pulled off one of the day’s most unexpected results with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa. For a side that has spent most of the season rooted to the bottom, this was a precious moment of pride.

Goals from Joao Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes ensured Wolves pushed past Derby County’s infamous low-points record from 2007-08 and picked up only their second league victory of the campaign.

It may not save their season, but the performance offered something even more important for supporters: fight. The team looked united, organised and determined to bow out with dignity rather than a whimper.

Villa, meanwhile, continue to wobble. Now third on the table, they have won just two of their last seven league games. Injuries to key players have exposed their lack of depth, and frustrations boiled over during the match as senior players openly argued on the pitch. Their push for a top-four finish is suddenly under threat.

Bournemouth held by Sunderland in European setback

Bournemouth’s eight-game unbeaten run continued, but a 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland felt like a missed opportunity for a team eyeing a late European push.

Eliezer Mayenda struck first for Sunderland, taking advantage of a loose ball from a saved effort. Bournemouth fought back through Evanilson’s scrappy equaliser, but despite late pressure they couldn’t find a winner.

Sunderland, boosted by the return of Granit Xhaka, showed far more stability than in recent weeks. Bournemouth stay eighth, while Sunderland remain close behind in 11th.

Newcastle slip again as Everton snatch classic at St James’ Park

Everton left St James’ Park with a 3-2 win after a breathless contest that saw Newcastle equalise twice, only for the visitors to respond immediately each time.

Jarrad Branthwaite headed Everton in front, before Jacob Ramsey levelled through a deflected effort. Beto restored the lead before halftime, and although Jacob Murphy pulled Newcastle level again, Thierno Barry’s scruffy finish proved decisive.

The defeat deepens Newcastle’s frustrations as they continue to drop points despite having secured a Champions League last-16 meeting with Barcelona. Everton, meanwhile, jump back into the top eight.

Man City squeeze past Leeds to stay on Arsenal’s heels

Manchester City were made to work hard for a 1-0 win at Leeds, but the three points keep them firmly in the title race.

Leeds started the stronger side, pressing high and carving out the better chances. Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed two clear opportunities and Brenden Aaronson caused problems between the lines.

City, lacking rhythm for much of the half, finally broke through just before the interval as Antoine Semenyo finished off a rare flowing move. Leeds pushed late on, but City’s defence held firm to close the gap behind Arsenal to just two points.

Brentford survive seven-goal madness as VAR denies Burnley

The most dramatic match of the day came at Turf Moor, where Brentford beat Burnley 4-3 in a wild, breathless showdown.

Brentford raced into a 3-0 lead through Mikkel Damsgaard, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade, leaving Burnley stunned and their fans restless. But just before halftime, a Michael Kayode own goal sparked an incredible Burnley comeback.

Goals from Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming brought the hosts level before another Flemming finish was ruled out for offside. Damsgaard’s 93rd-minute strike looked to have sealed it, but the drama was far from done.

In the 98th minute, Ashley Barnes fired what looked like the equaliser. After a long VAR review, the goal was controversially ruled out for handball, leaving Burnley devastated and their survival hopes even slimmer.
