Pirates return to the summit after late Makgopa penalty seals win over Richards Bay

by nikita.m

Orlando Pirates tightened the Betway Premiership title race on Wednesday night, grinding out a 2-0 victory over Richards Bay at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto.

In a match where chances came and went for much of the evening, the Buccaneers eventually secured all three points thanks to a composed stoppage-time penalty from Evidence Makgopa. The result keeps Pirates firmly locked in a tense title battle with Mamelodi Sundowns as the season edges toward its decisive stretch.

With both sides now sitting on 47 points, Pirates move ahead on goal difference and reclaim top spot on the league standings.

Pirates keep pressure on title rivals

For a club chasing its first league crown in more than a decade, every result matters. Pirates approached the clash knowing that slip-ups could give Sundowns breathing room in what has become one of the tightest title races in recent PSL seasons.

Head coach Jose Riveiro fielded a strong starting lineup, boosted by the return of Kamogelo Sebelebele from suspension. The winger wasted little time reminding fans of his value.

Pirates dominated possession early and began probing the Richards Bay defence inside the opening minutes. Thalente Mbatha tried his luck from distance in the sixth minute, forcing goalkeeper Ian Otieno into a sharp save.

Otieno was busy again moments later when Deon Hotto whipped in a dangerous free kick that had the home crowd briefly rising from their seats.

Appollis breaks the deadlock

The breakthrough eventually arrived midway through the first half.

Sebelebele showed quick feet near the byline before delivering a low cross into the six-yard box. Oswin Appollis timed his run perfectly and calmly tapped the ball home for his fourth league goal of the campaign.

The early lead reflected Pirates’ control of the game, although they struggled to extend their advantage despite creating several promising opportunities before halftime.

Yanela Mbuthuma came close twice late in the first half but could not convert, leaving Richards Bay within touching distance heading into the break.

Richards Bay hold firm

To their credit, Richards Bay remained disciplined and organised defensively. The Natal Rich Boys arrived in Soweto hoping to build on recent momentum but spent large parts of the match absorbing pressure.

Otieno continued to frustrate Pirates attackers in the second half, producing another crucial save to deny Hotto from close range in the 66th minute.

Pirates kept pushing for a second goal that would put the match beyond doubt. Mbatha scuffed a promising chance from a corner, while youngster Relebohile Mofokeng saw a curling effort tipped onto the crossbar.

Makgopa seals the points late on

Just when it looked like Pirates might have to settle for a narrow one-goal win, the game produced late drama.

Deep into stoppage time, substitute Tshepang Moremi was brought down inside the Richards Bay penalty area. The referee pointed straight to the spot.

Evidence Makgopa stepped up confidently and buried the penalty to secure a 2-0 victory and ignite celebrations among the Soweto faithful.

What the result means for the title race

The win marks Pirates’ third consecutive league victory and keeps the pressure firmly on Mamelodi Sundowns in what is shaping up to be a gripping Betway Premiership race.

For Richards Bay, the defeat ends hopes of building momentum after their previous win over a Soweto side. The result sees them slip out of the top eight and down to 10th place on the standings with 23 points.

Both teams now turn their attention to the weekend fixtures. Pirates will again play at home when they host Siwelele in Soweto, while Richards Bay travel to Durban for a KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

With the title race heating up, Pirates fans will be hoping performances like Wednesday night’s become the norm as the Buccaneers chase domestic glory.
