Orlando’s historic football home is stepping into a new chapter. A fresh naming rights agreement has transformed the old Orlando Stadium into the newly christened Orlando Amstel Arena, and with it comes a wave of investment aimed at modernising one of South Africa’s most iconic sporting venues.
For the thousands of supporters who fill Soweto’s streets on match day, this is more than a rebrand. It is a promise that the stadium they’ve grown up with is about to become a better, safer and more exciting place to watch the Beautiful Game.
A deal designed to bring real change
Stadium Management South Africa CEO Bertie Grobbelaar did not hold back when speaking about the significance of the partnership. He explained that the deal is not just about a new signboard at the entrance. It is about unlocking revenue that will finally allow long-awaited upgrades to take shape.
According to Grobbelaar, one of the venue’s ongoing challenges has been basic infrastructure that needed attention, including damaged seating and limited hospitality offerings. With the new income stream, he says they can now make meaningful improvements like the addition of 11 new suites on the northern side and other enhancements that will uplift the overall fan experience.
Grobbelaar also noted that naming rights deals of this kind are extremely rare in the local football landscape, making the agreement a potentially game-changing moment for stadium development in South Africa.
Preserving heritage while adding fresh flair
For Amstel, attaching its name to the stadium is more than a marketing exercise. Andrea Quaye, Marketing Director at Heineken Beverages, explained that the intention was to honour the legacy of Orlando while giving the venue a new burst of energy.
Keeping the name Orlando was non-negotiable, she said, because the area’s significance stretches far beyond football. It carries the heritage of Soweto and generations of Pirates supporters. The decision to rename the venue the Orlando Amstel Arena was a way to blend tradition with modernity, adding what she calls “a bit of pizazz” without losing the stadium’s identity.
Quaye added that the partnership is rooted in a genuine desire to contribute to South Africa’s football culture. By investing directly into the stadium, Amstel aims to help create a space where fans feel celebrated, comfortable and connected.
A new chapter for a beloved stadium
For a venue that has hosted some of the country’s biggest football moments, this new era could mark the beginning of something special. With renovations planned, new suites already in place and a renewed commitment to elevating game day, the Orlando Amstel Arena is positioning itself as a modern space that still honours its roots.
Supporters may soon find themselves walking into a stadium that feels both familiar and refreshed, carrying the memories of the past while offering a glimpse into the future of South African football.
