The country’s football federation has confirmed that discussions are underway with FIFA to shift their group-stage fixtures to Mexico, raising fresh questions about logistics and safety ahead of the global showpiece.

Why Iran wants a venue change
At the heart of the situation is growing tension in the Middle East, which has spilled into the sporting world. Iranian officials have expressed concern about security guarantees in the United States, especially following recent political remarks and ongoing conflict in the region.
Football federation president Mehdi Taj made it clear that travelling to the US may not be an option under the current circumstances, signalling a firm stance from the national team’s leadership.
Matches originally set for the United States
Iran were initially scheduled to play their opening World Cup fixtures in American cities, including Los Angeles and Seattle. Their group includes New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt, with their training base planned for Arizona.
