Banyana Banyana defender Bambanani Mbane has found herself at the centre of online debate after issuing a public apology for comments she made on social media during South Africa’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign.

The defender initially came under fire after using strong language in a social media video, prompting widespread criticism from football fans.

SAFA responds to Bambanani Mbane’s controversial remarks

Recently, the South African Football Association (SAFA) released a statement distancing itself from the remarks. The association expressed concern over the incident, apologised to supporters and stakeholders, and confirmed that the matter would be reviewed internally.

SAFA also urged fans to remain focused on supporting Banyana Banyana ahead of their crucial WAFCON clash against Ivory Coast, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

Bambanani Mbane issues public apology

Following the backlash, Bambanani shared a video apologising for her comments. She expressed regret for her choice of words and apologised to her teammates, SAFA, and South African supporters.

She acknowledged that her remarks were inappropriate and said she understood the disappointment they had caused.

Despite the controversy, many supporters have called for the focus to return to Banyana Banyana’s on-pitch performances as they continue their WAFCON campaign, stressing the importance of backing the team at a crucial stage of the tournament.
