Fans remember Pitso Mosimane after Al Ahly sack Jose Riveiro

by Nomonde Simelane

As they come to terms with the sudden and shocking news of Egypt’s Al Ahly parting ways with Jose Riveiro after merely seven games into his tenure, fans cannot help but applaud Pitso Mosimane for his longevity with the club.

In a not-so-surprising move, Egyptian football giants Al Ahly have terminated the contract of former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro after just seven games into his contract. This comes after the Spanish tactician won just one match in his first seven showings with the team. As Al Ahly have gained notoriety for their front office that is quick to sack any coach who fails to deliver on their desired outcomes, which is winning at every level, speculation of his looming doom circulated just a few games into the season, after he failed to secure games that are usually easy for the team.

The news has drawn mixed reactions from football fans across the board, as some believe that the decision was premature, while others reveal being content with the decision, as the team is known for their no-nonsense tolerance. Some Orlando Pirates fans have relished the news, as they express bitterness at Jose leaving their own club, while others empathised with him.

On the other hand, some fans cannot help but think of former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, who survived a much longer tenure under the strict Al Ahly regime. During his time as head coach, Pitso took the Egyptian giants all the way to win the African Super Cup, as well as their second CAF Champion’s League title.

These fans have hailed Pitso and tagged him as one of one. They believe he will go down in Mzansi’s history books as one of the greatest to lead a squad, and cite his extensive winning catalogue as evidence. According to these fans, Jose’s failure to at least last a full season in Egypt serves a testament to Pitso’s skill and longevity.

Pitso Mosimane won 2 CAF Champions league titles for Al Ahly, and he resigned immediately after that. Al Ahly wanted to continue with him.
