South Africa’s Blitzboks are heading into the final leg of the HSBC SVNS Series with the title within touching distance after a commanding victory at the Vancouver Sevens.
The Springbok Sevens side powered past Spain 38-12 in the final on Sunday, collecting their third tournament title of the season and putting themselves firmly in the race to win the overall series.
With just one tournament remaining in New York next weekend, the Blitzboks now sit level on points with Fiji, setting up a dramatic final showdown for the 2026 crown.

A statement win in Vancouver
The final began as a tight contest, but it did not take long for the Blitzboks to stamp their authority on the match.
A quick penalty tap created the first breakthrough, sending Ryan Oosthuizen racing more than 50 metres downfield to score the opening try. From that moment, South Africa’s relentless defence and sharp attacking play began to tell.
Spain made a costly error deep in their own territory soon after, allowing the Blitzboks to pounce. Sebastian Jobb finished the move with a simple run-in after the ball was spread quickly across the field.
Before halftime, South Africa struck again. A clever grubber kick from Tristan Leyds slipped behind Spain’s defensive line, and Shilton van Wyk chased it down before gathering the ball to score.
By the break, the Blitzboks held a comfortable 17-0 lead.

South Africa keep the pressure on
The second half followed a similar script. A turnover penalty close to Spain’s line gave the Blitzboks another opportunity, and Van Wyk crossed for his second try of the match.
Spain did manage to get on the scoreboard when Jeremy Trevithick broke through for a long-range try. However, South Africa quickly responded from the restart. Sebastian Jobb burst through the defensive line before offloading to Gino Cupido, who sprinted in under the posts.
Captain Impi Visser eventually added another try to cap off a dominant performance and seal the trophy for South Africa.
Title race heading to New York
The Vancouver triumph marks the Blitzboks’ third tournament victory this season after earlier successes in Cape Town and Perth. With five events completed, South Africa’s consistency has pushed them right to the top of the standings.
They now share 86 points with Fiji, although the Pacific Islanders remain technically first due to a slightly better points difference.
That means the HSBC SVNS title will be decided next weekend in New York, where the two rugby sevens powerhouses will battle it out for the overall crown.

Coach praises growing consistency
Springbok Sevens head coach Philip Snyman praised his squad for delivering one of their most complete performances of the season.
He noted that the team improved steadily throughout the tournament before producing a clinical display in the final.
Snyman also highlighted the depth in the squad after making several changes to the lineup that previously won in Perth.
According to the coach, consistency remains a major focus for the team as they aim to build the strongest sevens system in world rugby.
While the players will celebrate the Vancouver victory, Snyman made it clear the job is far from finished.
The Blitzboks now turn their attention to recovery and preparation for New York, where the 2026 HSBC SVNS champion will be crowned.
