Pirates send title warning as Chippa ease relegation fears in decisive Betway Premiership weekend

by nikita.m

The Betway Premiership table is beginning to take shape and this past weekend may well be remembered as a turning point at both ends of the standings.

In Orlando, the title charge gathered serious momentum. In Gqeberha, survival hopes were reignited. And in Polokwane, two sides cancelled each other out in a stalemate that helped neither climb nor collapse.

With just 16 matches played for some sides, the pressure is already unmistakable.

Pirates send early message in title race

There is something about Orlando Stadium on a big night that feels different. The Buccaneers fed off that energy and wasted no time asserting dominance.

Orlando Pirates stormed into the lead inside four minutes against Marumo Gallants. After Gallants had struck the woodwork through Katlego Otladisa, Pirates responded with ruthless efficiency. Yamela Mbuthuma finished calmly after being set up by Relebohile Mofokeng.

That early blow set the tone.

Patrick Maswanganyi doubled the advantage before half-time with a crisp strike from distance, the kind that silences any lingering doubt in the stands. By the time Mofokeng added a third late on, the result was beyond question.

Gallants pushed late through Jaisen Clifford, but their fight at the bottom of the table continues. Pirates, meanwhile, moved to 38 points from 16 matches, opening a six-point gap at the summit.

With a blockbuster clash against Mamelodi Sundowns looming at FNB Stadium, the title race could tilt even further. A win there would stretch the lead to nine points with 13 matches still to play. In a league where consistency wins championships, Pirates look locked in.

Chippa find belief at the right time

At the other end of the table, survival often hinges on moments of composure. Chippa United found theirs against Richards Bay FC.

The Chilli Boys knew exactly what was at stake. Relegation scraps in the PSL are rarely pretty, but they are always intense.

Sirgio Kammies opened the scoring just before the break, reacting quickest after goalkeeper Ian Otieno spilled the ball. It was the kind of scrappy goal that changes the mood in a stadium.

After the restart, Chippa stayed composed. Justice Figuareido turned provider for Somila Ntsundwana to double the advantage, and when Sinoxolo Kwayiba capitalised on a defensive error late on, the result was sealed.

The 3-0 victory lifts Chippa four points clear of the relegation zone. In a season where momentum has been hard to find, this felt like a statement performance. Richards Bay remain in serious danger and will need a response soon.

Polokwane and Siwelele cancel each other out

Earlier in the day, Polokwane City and Siwelele FC shared the points in a goalless draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

It was a tightly contested encounter with defensive discipline outweighing attacking flair. Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Kgaogelo Sekgota threatened early for the hosts, while Siwelele looked dangerous through Chibuike Ohizu and Tebogo Potsane.

Goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula proved decisive, denying Vincent Pule late on to preserve the clean sheet.

In truth, neither side did enough in the final third. The result keeps both hovering in mid-table uncertainty, safe for now but far from secure.

A weekend that shapes both battles

What makes the Betway Premiership so compelling is the simultaneous drama at the top and bottom. While Pirates edge closer to silverware dreams, teams like Gallants and Richards Bay are fighting simply to stay alive.

For supporters across South Africa, every round now carries consequence. Titles are not won in February, but they can be shaped here. Survival is not secured in one night, but belief can certainly be rebuilt.

This weekend offered both.
