Midweek PSL nights are never short of tension, noise, and unpredictability. This week’s Betway Premiership fixtures lived up to that South African football chaos, with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns dropping points in Bloemfontein, while teams near the bottom continued their scrap for survival. Social media had plenty to say, with fans from across the country trying to make sense of another dramatic round.
Below is how the action unfolded around the country.
Siwelele Hold Sundowns In Bloemfontein Battle
Mamelodi Sundowns arrived at Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium expecting to continue their title charge, but Siwelele had other ideas. The home crowd didn’t have to wait long to celebrate. In the 27th minute, Vincent Pule punished a rare Ronwen Williams error after Tebogo Potsane pounced on the loose ball and squared it for a calm finish.
The goal was fully earned by a Siwelele side that had tweaked their line up with Neo Rapoo and Gape Moralo starting. Sundowns, who brought in Aubrey Modiba, looked comfortable in possession but struggled to create anything threatening.
Their night took another knock when Grant Kekana limped off early, forcing Kegan Johannes into action long before planned.
Masandawana came back stronger after the break, suffocating Siwelele in their own half. A slick passing move finally unlocked the defence as Lebo Mothiba found the equaliser in the 74th minute. But despite piling on pressure, the champions could not force a winner.
For a team known for turning dominance into results, this draw felt like points dropped more than one earned.
Stellenbosch’s Struggles Grow As Polokwane City Pounce
Stellenbosch’s season continues to spiral after another tough night, this time falling 2-1 to Polokwane City at Athlone Stadium. Although Stellies controlled early phases, City stayed disciplined and hit with precision just before the break.
Siyabonga Mashinini earned a penalty in the 38th minute which Lebohang Nkaki tucked away. Moments later, Thabelo Tshekweta doubled the lead with a well timed header from a Tlou Nkwe cross.
Steve Barker’s side reshuffled and fought hard in the second half. Langelihle Phili’s goal on the hour mark gave fans some hope, but the comeback never materialised. The defeat leaves Stellenbosch stuck in 14th place, with pressure rising as frustration grows locally.
Durban City Cruise As Orbit College Sink Further
Durban City shook off their loss to Orlando Pirates and confidently dispatched Orbit College 3-0 at Olympia Park. Saziso Magawana caused constant problems, but the breakthrough only came on the stroke of halftime via a Thabo Nodada penalty.
Samkelo Maseko extended the lead in the 55th minute after another Magawana contribution. Orbit’s Mbulelo Wagaba nearly pulled one back, but veteran goalkeeper Darren Keep produced a strong save to shut the door.
Haashim Domingo wrapped up the night with a long range strike in added time. Durban City now sit seventh, while Orbit are left in 13th, anxiously looking over their shoulder.
Sekhukhune Snap Their Winless Run Against Magesi
At Seshego Stadium, Sekhukhune United finally ended their five match winless streak with a hard fought 1-0 win over Magesi. Vusumuzi Ncube struck early in the sixth minute, and that goal proved enough.
The rest of the match was a tactical grind. Neither side created much before the break, but Magesi dominated the second half without finding an equaliser. The result keeps Magesi in 15th place and lifts Sekhukhune to a strong third on the table.
Chippa United Hold Chiefs As Gqeberha Night Ends Goalless
Kaizer Chiefs’ trip to Gqeberha ended in frustration as they were held to a 0-0 draw by bottom side Chippa United. While Chiefs controlled large parts of the match, they struggled to convert pressure into goals.
Asanele Velebayi produced the first shot on target in the 21st minute after good interplay with Mfundo Vilakazi, but the match never fully opened up. Chiefs fired wide on multiple occasions, and Chippa came closest late in the first half when Asanele Bonani’s strike missed by inches.
The second half saw Ngcobo force a sharp save from Dumisani Msibi, while Boy Madingwane tried his luck from distance. Still, the breakthrough never came.
Chiefs remain fifth, with one more fixture against TS Galaxy before the AFCON 2025 break. Chippa stay glued to the bottom but will take pride in a gritty defensive showing.
