The dream of seeing Bafana Bafana back on the world’s biggest football stage is edging closer to reality. On a chilly Friday night in Bloemfontein, Hugo Broos’ men turned up the heat with a convincing 3-0 victory over neighbours Lesotho, tightening their grip on top spot in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nkota Sets the Tone
It didn’t take long for the hosts to settle in front of a passionate Free State crowd. Mohau Nkota, who recently signed with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq made his mark on the international stage, opened the scoring after just 15 minutes. His crisp volley at the far post sent the stadium into raptures and gave Bafana the early control they needed.
Foster and Appollis Seal the Deal
The second half saw South Africa’s dominance rewarded. Aubrey Modiba’s powerful strike forced a spill from Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane, allowing Burnley striker Lyle Foster to pounce and double the lead. Just minutes later, Oswin Appollis showed his composure by slotting home the third, created by Foster, to put the result beyond doubt.
With a 3-0 cushion, Bafana were able to manage the game and enjoy the cheers from a crowd who know just how significant this campaign could become.
A Nation Dares to Dream
South Africa last appeared at a World Cup in 2010, when the country hosted the tournament. Since then, qualifying campaigns have been filled with heartbreak and near misses. But this time feels different. With three matches left they sit at the top of Group C with 16 points, optimism is flooding social media.
“Bafana is cooking!” one fan posted on X, while another wrote: “We’re not just qualifying, we’re building a team that can compete.” Hashtags like #Bafana2026 and #RoadToWorldCup began trending as supporters celebrated the victory.
The Big Test Awaits
The job, however, is far from done. Next up is a showdown with Nigeria — Africa’s perennial powerhouse — also in Bloemfontein on Tuesday. For many, that clash will be the real test of Bafana’s credentials.
Still, for now, South Africans are allowing themselves to dream again. With Nkota, Foster, and Appollis leading a new generation, the possibility of hearing “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” ring out in the stadiums of USA, Mexico, and Canada in 2026 feels more real than ever.
