The Comrades Marathon, a legendary annual ultramarathon, continues to captivate runners and enthusiasts worldwide. The 2026 racing event on 14 June promises another extraordinary test of endurance, spirit, and camaraderie.

It is that time again for runners coming from around the world to flock to KwaZulu-Natal for the race. With just under a week to go before the race starts, anticipation is high, and runners are ready for this pinnacle event in South African road running. As always, the race will challenge runners with rugged terrain, steep hills, and unpredictable weather, making it one of the toughest ultras globally.

A test of endurance

Sunday will be a gruelling 12-hour-plus race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg with a race distance of about 85.77km. Although the distance may change, the race delegates will communicate it. Athletes participating in the race will have to abide by the rules and agree to the conditions of the race.

Who to look forward to at the Comrades Marathon

Among the men’s side, there is a thrilling opening with no clear favourite this year. Piet Wiersma, who is the defending up-run champion, won the 2024 up-run place to win the whole thing this year. But his main contender is the seasoned and highly accomplished Tete Dijana, a three-time champion with relentless drive and experience.

Other frontrunners are former champion Edward Mothibi, who remains a serious threat, and the Russian contender Nikolai Volkov, who adds an international flair and skill, making the competition even more intense.

The women’s competition at the Comrades Marathon tells a compelling story of unwavering excellence, with Gerda Steyn standing out as the overwhelming favourite to defend her title. Steyn is not only aiming to secure her fourth consecutive Comrades victory but also wants to claim her fifth overall win, cementing her legacy.

She plans to capitalise on her remarkable form from winning the Two Oceans Marathon in April, continuing with another win at the Comrades 2026.

There is tough competition for Steyn with Kenya’s Shelmith Muriuki, the 2022 champion Alexandra Morozova, and our own South African star Irvette van Zyl, who will all be serious contenders for the podium.

Winning prize

There is equal prize money this year with both the men’s and women’s race taking home R925 000,00.
