Jazz artist Thandi Ntuli chats to us about her music and the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival

The pianist, composer, vocalist and arranger chats to us about what inspires her, her music and upcoming performance at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival.

By Fundiswa Nkwanyana

My love for music comes from a deep desire to express my feelings.  Growing up, I used to listen to music and was amazed at how a song could spark so much light in me. This led to me feeling a strong yearning to express myself musically.  I decided to embark on a music career because I wanted to share the light that I felt when I listened to music.

My inspiration to create music comes in different shapes and forms. Sometimes I get inspired by watching a great gig, hearing an impactful talk or by events happening around me. Even though the creative process of creating music can be frustrating, I still enjoy the overall process because it’s so exhilarating.

I’m so excited to be performing my own songs at the upcoming Joy of Jazz Festival.   In the past, I used to play with other bands, but this year will be the first time that I perform my own songs from my album titled “Exiled.” I’m looking forward to sharing my music and to watch performances from incredible bands and musicians.

The Festival will take place from the 27th to the 29th of September at the Sandton Convention Centre.
