Hair to impress

by Kwanele Mathebula

Flaunting beautiful hair is a satisfying treat for many women. But, beautiful hair and the constant changing of styles are accompanied by a bad side – breakage and loss. The main culprits are usually incorrect relaxer processes, damage from dyeing and protective hairstyles.

In order to protect your hair from breakage, you have to relax it once every six or eight weeks and be sure o choose the right chemical. Furthermore, avoid removing protective styles, relaxing or dyeing on the same day, says Betito Ebengo, hair expert at ORS. Even the most broken hair can be revived.

Here are 4 tricks to try:

1. Don’t wash your hair too often. Shampoo traps oil, which dries out your hair, making it prone to breakage. But if you exercise daily, wash it every second day because sweat contains lactic acid that may cause loss.

2. Blow-drying is part of many people’s routine. But, too much exposure to heat does more damage than good. If you have straight hair or a weave that requires this, use a heat protectant after blowing it. Quickly switch to cold air to cool it down.

3. Treat your scalp at least twice a month. This keeps your hair follicles clean and prevents blockage that may cause thinning.

4. Always use a conditioner. It prevents frizz and makes your hair smooth and shiny.
