Women For Change calls for national shutdown to combat GBV

Woman For Change, known to advocate for the constitutional rights of women and children in South Africa, has proposed a women’s shutdown ahead of G20.

The NPO said this shutdown will show the economic and social impact of women’s absence.

“We call on all women and members of the LGBTQI+ community across South Africa to refrain from all paid and unpaid work in workplaces, universities, homes, and communities to demonstrate the economic and social impact of their absence. Because until South Africa stops burying a woman every 2.5 hours, the G20 cannot speak of growth and progress,” they penned.

As ways of participating in the shutdown set for Friday November 21, the NPO has suggested the following:

  • Don’t work: No paid or unpaid labour
  • Don’t spend money and withdraw from the economy for one day
  • Join the 15 minutes standstill by lying down for 15 minutes at 12 pm to honour the 15 women murdered everyday, and bring South Africa to a complete still
  • Wear black to stand in mourning and resistance
  • Change your profile picture to purple to make the shutdown visible online
  • Share share share. Make the shutdown impossible to ignore
