Stanley Mathabatha Resigns as ANC Limpopo Chair Amid Allegations of Conference Irregularities

by Zaghrah Anthony

In a move that has sent ripples through South African politics, Stanley Mathabatha, the former Premier of Limpopo and current Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, has resigned from his position as Chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo. His resignation, announced in a letter to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula dated 1 September 2025, cites concerns over misconduct and a departure from the party’s core values during regional conferences in the Vhembe and Waterberg regions.

The Catalyst: Allegations of Conference Irregularities

Mathabatha’s decision to step down follows allegations of vote rigging and improper conduct during the aforementioned regional conferences. These claims have raised eyebrows within the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), prompting an investigation led by NEC member Noxolo Kiviet. The controversy centers around the Vhembe conference, where reports suggest interference from national leaders, and the Waterberg conference, which has similarly been scrutinized for procedural irregularities.

A Legacy of Leadership

Stanley Mathabatha’s political journey has been marked by decades of service and leadership. Joining the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, at the age of 20, he has been a steadfast advocate for the party’s principles. Serving as Limpopo’s Premier from 2013 to 2024, Mathabatha played a pivotal role in the province’s development. His tenure was characterized by efforts to stabilize the provincial administration and promote inclusive growth. In 2024, he transitioned to the national stage as Deputy Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, continuing his commitment to public service.

Public Reaction: Mixed Feelings Across the Nation

The news of Mathabatha’s resignation has elicited a spectrum of reactions from the South African public. While some commend his decision as a stand for integrity and accountability, others express skepticism, suggesting that his departure might be a strategic move to allow for a smoother succession within the party. The ANC Limpopo spokesperson, Jimmy Machaka, has confirmed that the party will address the issues raised in Mathabatha’s letter, indicating ongoing discussions within the organization.

The Future of ANC Leadership in Limpopo

Mathabatha’s resignation opens the door for new leadership within the ANC in Limpopo. The province’s political landscape is poised for change, with potential candidates emerging to fill the void left by his departure. As the NEC continues its investigation into the regional conference allegations, the focus will likely shift to ensuring that future party processes uphold the integrity and values that Mathabatha has long championed.
