The African National Congress (ANC) has faced criticism after a video circulated on social media showing party volunteers handing out loaves of bread to residents as part of an apparent campaign event ahead of the upcoming local government elections.

In the video, a volunteer says “one loaf one family, ANC is life,” sparking backlash from some social media users who accused the party of trying to buy support from poor communities.

ANC provincial secretary Muzi Chirwa initially denied the event took place in Mpumalanga, saying the party usually distributes food parcels rather than single loaves of bread, but another party official later confirmed the incident occurred in the Inkangala District Municipality, The Citizen reported.

The ANC is reportedly awaiting a detailed report on the matter.

The controversy comes as the ANC faces declining electoral support in major urban municipalities since the 2016 local government elections.
