The resignation of former minister Dion George from both the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Parliament has exposed deep internal fractures, intensifying scrutiny of John Steenhuisen’s leadership and the party’s stability.

George’s decision to quit has divided political analysts, with some describing it as a blow that weakens the party’s leadership and credibility. It also raises the question of whether DA leader, John Steenhuisen, can contain the fallout and move on.

As a long-time member of the party, Dion George had been with the DA since 1995. He announced his resignation on Thursday, following a prolonged and public clash with leader Steenhuisen. The fallout has reignited questions about the party’s internal discipline and its ability to manage dissent at senior levels.

The recently-resigned minister said he was pushed out of the party after being removed from the Cabinet in November 2025. He continued to insist his political fate was sealed when the party asked for his dismissal as minister.

After he was removed, he was promptly replaced by the DA spokesperson Willie Aucamp. For any party, the loss of a long-serving figure has more than just a personnel change. It opens up raw debates about power, loyalty, and stability within the party walls.

Dion George further added that “the DA leadership, under John Steenhuisen had been ‘captured’ by the ANC and criminal interests”.

He has accused the party of losing its backbone in the Government of National Unity (GNU), supporting ANC budgets and policies.

Political analysts are divided over this departure, with some viewing it as a setback for the party.
