New Grasslands National Park expands South Africa’s conservation footprint

In a landmark victory for environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation, South Africa has officially declared a new national park, Grasslands National Park, in the Eastern Cape.

Announced by Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister David Maynier on 9 October 2026, the newly established Grasslands National Park spans an impressive 10,225 hectares of pristine landscapes.

Encompassing 18 individual properties nestled between Nqanqarhu and Rhodes, the protected area aims to safeguard critical water source zones, rich ecological grasslands, and vital wetland ecosystems that sustain both regional wildlife and local communities.

Grasslands National Park: Safeguarding biodiversity and water security

The creation of the Grasslands National Park addresses a crucial gap in South Africa’s conservation strategy, as high-altitude grasslands remain among the country’s most threatened yet ecologically vital biomes.

These ecosystems act as natural water towers, filtering and regulating freshwater supplies for surrounding river systems and downstream users. By bringing over 10,225 hectares under formal state protection, the initiative secures fragile habitats for endemic flora, high-altitude bird species, and diverse fauna.

Management and administrative oversight of the park have been formally entrusted to South African National Parks (SANParks), ensuring rigorous conservation standards, habitat restoration, and sustainable ecological management.

Balancing conservation and land stewardship

A unique aspect of the Grasslands National Park’s establishment is its collaborative framework, which incorporates formal biodiversity stewardship agreements with local landowners and stakeholders.

Rather than displacing existing regional practices, the model is designed to retain and restore high-altitude biodiversity while allowing compatible, sustainable agricultural activities, such as managed conservation grazing, to continue under strict environmental oversight.

This cooperative approach ensures local farming communities remain active partners in land stewardship while helping species adapt to climate shifts.

Community impact and eco-tourism potential

Beyond its profound environmental benefits, the establishment of the Grasslands National Park is expected to stimulate sustainable economic growth and eco-tourism in the rural Eastern Cape.

Situated near the historic rural towns of Nqanqarhu and Rhodes, the park opens new avenues for nature-based tourism, guided hiking trails, birdwatching, and localised hospitality ventures.

Conservationists and regional tourism stakeholders have lauded the announcement, noting that community-inclusive eco-tourism will generate employment opportunities and foster a deeper appreciation for local biodiversity among visitors and residents alike.
