South Africans have another opportunity to reconnect with nature as South African National Parks (SANParks) opens the gates to several national parks in the Cape Region for SA National Parks Week, running from 7 to 13 September 2026.

The annual initiative gives South African day visitors free entry to participating national parks, encouraging communities, families and nature lovers to explore the country’s natural heritage.
SANParks says the programme is designed to encourage South Africans to experience their national parks and develop a greater sense of ownership of these protected areas.
Which Cape parks are included?
With the SA National Park being this week, these are some of the Cape Region national parks you can take advantage of:
- Agulhas National Park
- Bontebok National Park
- Table Mountain National Park
- Tankwa Karoo National Park
- West Coast National Park, but with a free-access period running from Monday, 7 September to Friday, 11 September 2026 and does not include the weekend.
The Cape Region’s five parks offer very different experiences, from dramatic mountain and coastal scenery to wetlands, fynbos and the vast landscapes of the Karoo.
Who qualifies for free entry?
The National Parks Week initiative is aimed at South African citizens visiting as day visitors. Visitors should bring a valid South African identity document or other identification required by SANParks.
The free-access offer applies to park entry only. It does not automatically include accommodation, guided activities, game drives or other paid tourist activities. Those services continue to carry their normal fees.

A chance to reconnect with nature
SA National Parks Week is more than an opportunity to save money on an outing. It is intended to encourage South Africans to experience the country’s protected areas and understand the importance of conservation.
For families, friends and individuals who have always wanted to explore a nearby national park, the week provides a particularly good reason to make the trip.
Whether it is a coastal drive through West Coast National Park, a mountain outing in Table Mountain National Park, a visit to the southern Cape or an adventure into the Karoo, there are plenty of ways to spend a day outdoors.
With the spring season underway, SA National Parks Week offers South Africans a chance to step outside, explore their natural heritage and discover the remarkable landscapes protected within the country’s national park system.
