Physically gifted and tactically sharp, Hugo Ekitike excites, but comes with risk, rawness and a huge price tag, writes DYLAN JOHNSON.

Newcastle United’s pursuit of the 23-year-old striker has intensified, with a €100-million deal under discussion. Ekitike, long admired by the club, fits their model—tall, mobile, and technically gifted.

Writing for Soccermag, Johnson points out that his numbers for Frankfurt last season were impressive, including 22 goals and 12 assists, while his pressing and defensive work rate align well with Eddie Howe’s approach.

But as Johnson points out, Ekitike remains unproven at the highest level. His decision-making, finishing, and aerial threat still require refining. At such a high fee, Newcastle would be betting on potential—without the certainty of return. The move makes sense on paper, but comes with real risk, especially if it replaces Alexander Isak.
