One of the biggest fights in the boxing world this year is finally locked in. Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will face unbeaten American Terence “Bud” Crawford on 13 September in Las Vegas. This epic clash is for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight championship and will be streamed live on Netflix.
After months of speculation, rumours and some drama around where and when the fight would happen, the details are official. The event will be promoted by TKO, the group behind WWE and UFC, together with partners Turki Alalshikh, Riyadh Season, and Sela.
TKO president Dana White said: “Turki wants to make the biggest fights the fans want to see, and this is right up my alley. Are you kidding me? The first boxing fight I get to promote is Canelo vs Crawford? It’s a once in a lifetime fight.”
The fight has been building momentum since 2023, especially after Crawford scored a huge win against Errol Spence Jr. to become the undisputed welterweight champion. Crawford, who is 41-0 with 31 knockouts, recently moved up a weight class to claim the WBA junior middleweight title. Now, he will move up even more from 154 pounds to 168 pounds to challenge Alvarez.
Alvarez, with a record of 62 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws, has won titles across multiple weight classes up to 175 pounds. In his last fight, he defeated William Skelton to regain undisputed champion status at super middleweight. The Skelton bout was the first under Alvarez’s recent deal with Riyadh Season, who are also helping to promote this upcoming fight.
Both fighters are among the best of their generation, each having won world titles in four different divisions and having been undisputed champions. According to CBS Sports’ pound for pound rankings, Crawford is ranked number 4 and Alvarez is number 7.
While the official venue hasn’t been announced yet, speculation points to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the home of the NFL’s Raiders, as the likely location.
This fight also shows Netflix’s growing investment in live boxing events following the success of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson, and the upcoming trilogy fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.
Alvarez summed it up perfectly: “I’m super happy to be making history again, this time on a Riyadh Season card broadcast on Netflix. On 13 September, I’m ready to show once again that I am the best pound for pound fighter in the world.”
