Effects Of Overusing Social Media

We live in an era where some of us live for social media. We promote our work, network with like-minded individuals, consume entertainment and share all our life experiences on social media. Unfortunately, some people don’t see anything wrong with this.

Sharing everything on social networks has become not only normal, but also expected. However, what is not often spoken about are the negative effects of social media. Here are reasons not to overdo it, and how over continuous usage can actually affect your career, relationship and social life.

Your career

Companies use social media sites to screen and research potential candidates. It’s all well and good, but if you use your Twitter and Facebook accounts as a diary than a source of communication then this isn’t good news for you. I got my first job via a Twitter connection; so I will be the first one to advocate for social media etiquette, but let’s face it – no one wants to hire someone whose entire Instagram page is made up of alcohol and party pictures. Live life and share it online, but censor yourself and always figure out if you would share your intended post with your colleagues. If the answer is no, then you shouldn’t post it.

Your relationship

I love seeing my favourite celeb couples pictures on Instagram; I find them cute, but overexposing your relationship on social networks allows spectators to have the front row to your highs and lows, shreds your privacy and invites ex-partners to your union. So, although it feels good for your partner to acknowledge you on Facebook, know that less is more, and try to avoid sharing your relationship details during its early stages.

Your social life

Always remember that social media does not equate to a social life. We are now able to instantly connect with other people, but we should be careful not to replace our real friends with virtual groups. Connections made with actual humans, whom you can actually go out with, are much better for your emotional health.
