15 Common Sexual Health Myths Men Still Believe And the Truth Behind Them

15 Common Sexual Health Myths Men Still Believe And the Truth Behind Them

Despite living in an age where health information is only a few clicks away, sexual health remains one of the most misunderstood topics among men.

Some myths have been passed down through generations. Others come from social media, locker-room conversations or unrealistic portrayals in pornography and popular culture. The problem is that believing these myths can lead to unnecessary anxiety, poor health decisions and delayed medical treatment.

Here are some of the most common sexual health myths men still believe—and what the science actually says.

1. Erectile Dysfunction Only Happens to Older Men

This is one of the biggest misconceptions.

While erectile dysfunction (ED) becomes more common with age, younger men can experience it too. Factors such as stress, anxiety, smoking, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular issues and certain medications can all contribute to ED.

2. If You Have Erectile Dysfunction, It’s All in Your Head

Psychological factors can certainly play a role, but ED often has physical causes as well.

Blood vessel problems, diabetes, heart disease, nerve damage, hormone issues and medication side effects can all affect erectile function. In many cases, ED involves both physical and psychological factors.

3. A Single Bad Experience Means You Have ED

Every man experiences occasional performance difficulties.

Fatigue, alcohol consumption, stress and temporary health issues can affect sexual performance. ED is typically considered a persistent issue rather than a one-time occurrence.

4. Erectile Dysfunction Means You’re Not Attracted to Your Partner

Many men assume erection difficulties automatically reflect a lack of attraction.

In reality, sexual function can be influenced by dozens of physical and emotional factors unrelated to a partner’s attractiveness.

5. Testosterone Is the Solution to Every Sexual Problem

Low testosterone can affect libido and sexual function, but it is far from the only cause of sexual difficulties.

Taking testosterone without proper medical evaluation may not solve the problem and could potentially create other health concerns.

6. Bigger Always Means Better

Many men grow up believing penis size determines sexual satisfaction.

Research consistently shows that communication, emotional connection, compatibility and overall sexual health play far larger roles in relationship satisfaction than size alone.

7. Frequent Masturbation Causes Erectile Dysfunction

This myth refuses to disappear.

Current evidence does not support the idea that masturbation causes ED. Erectile dysfunction is generally linked to medical, psychological or lifestyle factors rather than masturbation itself.

8. Condoms Ruin Sexual Pleasure

Some men avoid condoms because they believe they make sex significantly less enjoyable.

While condoms can feel different, modern varieties are designed to maximize comfort and sensitivity while providing important protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

9. You Can Tell If Someone Has an STI Just by Looking at Them

One of the most dangerous myths.

Many STIs show no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages. A person can appear completely healthy while carrying and transmitting an infection.

Regular testing remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your partners.

10. Healthy Men Don’t Need STI Testing

Many men assume STI testing is only necessary if symptoms appear.

However, infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HIV can exist without obvious symptoms. Routine screening is often recommended based on individual risk factors.

11. HIV Can Be Spread Through Casual Contact

Some outdated misconceptions about HIV still persist.

HIV is not spread through hugging, sharing food, shaking hands, using the same toilet or everyday social contact. The virus is transmitted through specific bodily fluids under particular circumstances.

12. Fertility Problems Are Usually the Woman’s Responsibility

Infertility affects both men and women.

According to fertility specialists, male factors contribute to a significant proportion of infertility cases. Sperm quality, count, motility and overall reproductive health all play important roles.

13. Sexual Problems Mean You’re Less of a Man

This myth causes enormous emotional harm.

Issues such as ED, low libido, premature ejaculation or fertility challenges are medical conditions—not reflections of masculinity, worth or character. Many men experience these concerns at some point in their lives.

14. Alcohol Improves Sexual Performance

A drink may help reduce anxiety, but excessive alcohol often has the opposite effect.

Heavy drinking can interfere with erections, reduce sexual responsiveness and affect overall performance.

15. Social Media Sexual Advice Is Always Trustworthy

Platforms such as TikTok and Instagram are filled with sexual health tips, but not all are evidence-based.

Health experts have recently warned that some viral advice—including certain exercises promoted as universal fixes for erectile dysfunction—may not be appropriate for everyone and can even worsen symptoms in some cases.

Why These Myths Matter

Sexual health myths aren’t just harmless misunderstandings.

They can prevent men from seeking treatment, increase stigma around common health conditions and contribute to unnecessary fear or embarrassment. Studies and health professionals consistently emphasize that open conversations and accurate information are key to improving men’s sexual wellbeing.

Sexual health is an important part of overall wellbeing, yet it’s often surrounded by misinformation.

The reality is that most sexual health concerns—from erectile dysfunction and fertility challenges to STI prevention and libido changes—are far more common than many men realise.

The more we replace myths with facts, the easier it becomes for men to seek help when they need it, make informed decisions and maintain healthier relationships with both their bodies and their partners.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a man can do for his sexual health is simply stop believing everything he’s been told.
