A Celebration of Love and Tradition
Over the weekend, South African comedian Mpho “Popps” Modikoane celebrated a major milestone: his traditional Xhosa wedding with longtime partner Latoyah Mei-Modikoane. The couple, who share a daughter, Imani, marked the occasion in a vibrant ceremony that blended cultural rituals with personal joy.
Dressed in striking beige and black traditional Xhosa attire, the couple looked radiant, while friends, family, and colleagues filled the celebration with dance, laughter, and heartfelt gifting ceremonies.

Ho Hlabisa Bohadi: Welcoming Tradition
The weekend’s festivities centred on the Xhosa ritual Ho hlabisa bohadi, a ceremony where the groom is formally welcomed into the bride’s family. Popps explained the significance during a guest appearance on Podcast and Chill with MacG:
“Traditionally, the bride has to welcome you kubo (her family), and you have to welcome her kini (his family). You do an exchanging gifts ceremony, which is what we were preparing for,” he shared.
Clips shared online captured the joyous energy: the groom leading the bridal party in dance, the families seated for the ceremonial exchange of gifts, and moments of laughter and music.

A Love Story Ten Years in the Making
Earlier this year, the couple marked 15 years together, celebrating their enduring relationship on Instagram. Popps shared side-by-side images of their journey, captioning:
“How it started VS how it’s going. Happy anniversary to my beautiful wife, thank you for standing by my side through it all. 15 years in the game, 2 years married, here’s to a lifetime together.”
Their traditional wedding adds another chapter to a love story already formalised in a civil ceremony in 2023, reflecting a deep connection and commitment to family, culture, and community.

Celebrities and Friends Join the Festivities
The wedding was attended by a mix of Mzansi’s top talent. Nomzamo Mbatha graced the bridal party, while Popps’ colleagues Farieda “Pharoahfi” Metsileng and Tsitsi Chiumya joined in the celebrations, sharing clips online of the vibrant dances and ceremonies.
Despite the online buzz, the bride and groom themselves have yet to post personal photos of their traditional wedding, leaving fans and followers excited for an official glimpse. Social media was nonetheless awash with congratulations:
“Congratulations to Mpho and his beautiful better half,” one user wrote. Another added, “Congratulations, guys, anisebahle (you look beautiful).”
Celebrating Culture and Community
Beyond the glamour and celebrity attendance, this wedding highlights the importance of tradition in modern South African life. Through Ho hlabisa bohadi, the couple not only honoured Xhosa heritage but also celebrated family bonds and community connections that have supported them throughout their 15-year journey together.
With music, dance, and heartfelt rituals, Mpho “Popps” Modikoane and Latoyah Mei-Modikoane’s union serves as a beautiful reminder that love and culture go hand in hand, creating memories that last far beyond the wedding day.
