Things you should never say to your partner

by Unathi Balele

Words have the power to heal or harm, and in the context of a relationship, choosing the right words is crucial.

Effective communication is the foundation of a healthy and thriving relationship. However, there are certain things that can inflict deep wounds and irreparable damage to the bond you share with your partner. Here are a list of things by Stylecraze that you should never say to your partner if you want to maintain a loving and harmonious relationship.

“You’re just like your ex”

Bringing up past relationships can create unnecessary insecurities and doubts. Focus on building a strong foundation in your current relationship instead of dwelling on the past.

“You’re fat” or “You need to lose weight”

Body shaming and criticising your partner’s appearance can be extremely hurtful and damaging to their self-esteem. Promote a healthy lifestyle together and offer support rather than criticism.

“I don’t care” or “Whatever”

Using dismissive language can make your partner feel unimportant and devalued. Engage in open and respectful dialogue, showing that you genuinely care about their thoughts and feelings.

“You’re overreacting” or “You’re too sensitive”

Invalidating your partner’s emotions dismisses their feelings and can lead to a breakdown in trust. Show empathy and try to understand their perspective, even if you don’t agree.

“You’re just like your [negative trait] mother/father”

Bringing up negative comparisons to your partner’s family members can be hurtful and offensive. It is important to respect and maintain healthy boundaries with your partner’s family.
