How to deal with an overly jealous partner

by Unathi Balele

Jealousy in a relationship is that uncomfortable feeling you get when a partner gets too close to people of the opposite sex. It’s actually OK to feel that way. In a way, it shows that you care and don’t mean to share.

On the other hand, there is an excessive type of jealousy which is both irrational, childish, toxic and just so unreasonable.

According to Bustle, being in a relationship with a jealous partner shouldn’t necessarily be a deal breaker. Some people have trust issues due to past relationships or breakups, and it’s often possible to work through these problems together if both partners are committed to trying.

Dealing with an overly jealous partner can be challenging and may require a sensitive and tactful approach. Here are some suggestions on how to address this issue by Choosing Therapy:
  1. Communicate openly and honestly: Let your partner know how their jealousy is affecting you and your relationship. Express your feelings calmly and respectfully and listen to their concerns as well.
  2. Understand the root of their jealousy: Try to understand why your partner is feeling jealous. Is it due to insecurity, past experiences, or other underlying issues? Understanding the root cause can help you find a way to address the issue.
  3. Set clear boundaries: Be clear about what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour in your relationship. Set boundaries that respect your partner’s feelings without sacrificing your own freedom and autonomy.
  4. Reassure your partner: Make an effort to reassure your partner that they are loved and valued. Show them that you are committed to the relationship and that their jealousy is unfounded.
