What you need to know about keratin treatments on natural hair

The pursuit of healthy natural hair can be very challenging. Going through different kinds of products to find the one that works for your hair type can be just as tiring and damaging to the hair.

If you are looking for a treatment where you will not lose your natural curl, experts say a keratin treatment might just be the thing for you.

Byrdie spoke to 2 professional hairstylists Michelle Dixon and Kim Kimble to gain more insight into the specifics of keratin treatments:

“It’s a smoothing treatment that strengthens the hair. It doesn’t straighten hair, but it smoothes it, reduces the curl, targets weak spots, helps repair damage, and reinforces the hair structure,” the above-mentioned publication explains.

A keratin treatment does not contain chemicals you would typically find in relaxers or perm solutions such as  Hydroxide or ammonium thioglycolate, Michelle further explained: “Keratin is a protein treatment as keratin is a protein in the hair, hence the name.” Instead, with the treatment, your hair is smoothed with the use of the “active” ingredient keratin, a protein that naturally occurs in human hair.

Benefits

Since natural hair is inherently dryer, frizz will most likely occur. Keratin will keep your curl while fighting the frizz, according to the lifestyle magazine Essence.

Misconceptions

According to the lifestyle magazine, the biggest misconception is that keratin damages the hair. When the process is done correctly the keratin will improve the appearance and feel of your hair. Damage occurs when hairdressers make use of the incorrect formula for a client or flat-iron hair incorrectly.

It is important that you visit a professional salon, consult with a stylist who specializes in keratin services, and have the procedure done in an area with good ventilation, Essence stated.
