Dental braces is a procedure performed by orthodontists to align abnormal bites such as crooked and overcrowded teeth.

This procedure that corrects dental issues often leaves many people happier after the removal of their dental braces.

While the procedure’s end result is good motivation, it is important to note that they can be kept for a period between 12 and more months, depending on the severity of your dental issue, notes health hub Healthline.

For those looking to undergo this procedure and wondering what to expect after the braces application, here are a few things you can expect.

  • Might feel like your face and mouth look different – The first week of your wired teeth will take some getting used to. Tarrytown peadiatric dentistry and orthodontic centre 914Smiles adds that it is normal to feel that your face and lips are different after the braces procedure.
  • Its normal to talk funny – As your face may feel numb after the procedure, you may start talking funny in the first few days afterwards, adds the above mentioned information hub. The hub advises for a person to use the mouth ofter by talking, singing, calling others or reading out loud as this helps your mouth adjust easily to the new norm.
  • Your teeth can be sensitive – 914Smile shares that minor sensitivity and a “mild pain” may be felt after the procedure, adding that, it is nothing to worry about. What is not normal however, is a strong pain as braces aren’t painful, adds the hub.
  • Mouth Sores – Sandton based orthodontist Dr Steven J Flax shares that braces might leave one feeling a bit of irritation or even a “small mouth sore. The doctor adds, “Orthodontic wax can help alleviate this discomfort by providing a protective barrier between your braces and the inside of your mouth.
  • Regular Adjustments – Once the braces procedure has been completed, Dr Steven notes that regular visits to the orthodontist will be part of your routine until they are removed. “During these appointments, your braces may be tightened or adjusted to continue the alignment process, adds the specialist.
