Ways to resist being pressured to get married

by Sergio Miller

Many people view life as being a timeline. This affects the decisions we make which in turn, sets us up for the outcome achieving some of our biggest goals.

For many, these goals are the ones many expect us to have as we mature and get into a certain age bracket.

Some of these goals include, purchasing your first car, buying a house, and ultimately getting married.

Not reaching these goals by at least your 30’s is something that becomes conversational around the family dinner table, yet many people achieve things according to their own timelines.

In addition, there are a number of factors that might be the reasons for couple’s delay in getting married.

Relationship information hub, Couple Squad reveals that there are several reasons why people get married late.

These reasons are because of:

  • Career Focus – Many prioritise their careers in early life and delay marriage until they are established in their profession.
  • Educational Pursuits – Pursuing advanced degrees or certificates could extend the timeline of marriage.
  • Financial Stability – People delay marriage until they are financially secure.
  • Waiting for the right partner – Finding the right partner may take time. Many prefer someone who aligns with their goals and values.

However, many of these might not stop a fellow family member from publicly asking the question – “When are you getting married?”

Healthline explain that the easiest and most direct way is to deal with the situation when it comes to your family members

1. Find out what is going on in their mind – Their question might be coming from a good place so it is best to understand their point of view, especially if they are your parents.

2. Set boundaries with gratitude and appreciation – Sympathise with their concern, but politely make it clear when they are invading into your privacy.

3. Be clear and specific – If necessary, you may provide them with a clear explanation to your life’s decisions. Perhaps this will give them a better perspective.
