Ways to grow peanuts in your garden

Growing peanuts at home can be easier than most people think. With just the right growing guide, you can get your own homegrown peanuts. It is also a great way to enjoy fresh, homegrown snacks straight from your own garden. Whether you’re working with a small garden or just a few containers on a patio, this guide will walk you through the process of cultivating peanuts from sprouting to harvest.

Planting peanuts

To ensure successful growth, germinate the peanuts before planting. Start by germinating raw peanuts. You must start with fresh, raw, uncooked peanuts that are still in their shells. Soak them in room-temperature water overnight to soften the shells. After soaking, wrap the peanuts in a moist paper towel and place them in a warm, shaded area. You need to check them daily, and within a few days, the peanuts should begin to sprout roots.

Germinating beforehand helps jumpstart the growing process and ensures that only viable seeds are planted. It’s essential to choose a location that receives full sun. Protect your young growing peanuts with plastic row covers from the spring morning fog. The soil has to be loose, sandy, and have excellent drainage. Mixing with organic compost is recommended to enrich the soil with nutrients.

Growing the peanuts

Providing the right growing conditions for your peanuts to sprout is vital for their growth. Peanut growing requires warm temperatures and ample sunlight. Once planted, they’ll start growing green leafy shoots that resemble small bushy plants. Water well to keep the soil moist, but also be careful of overwatering, as this will not help the plants grow. The soil should feel damp but not soggy. As they mature, they will send flowering stalks down into the soil.

These flowering stalks are where the peanuts form beneath the surface. As long as you maintain consistent care throughout the growing season, your plants will begin to produce underground flowering pods filled with peanuts.
