South Africa is home to some of the most beautiful getaways, and if surfing is part of your activity list this summer, we have you sorted.

Summer is more than just traveling on road trips or sitting around a family braai. It is also an ideal opportunity to get out and explore the beauty that some of our most beloved beaches have to offer.

From Jeffrey’s Bay to Cape Town’s Muizenberg, each come with a personality of its own, but are equally able to provide you with experiences you will never forget.

For those surfing or considering trying out the sport, this summer is the perfect opportunity to do so.

Our country is considered to be one of the top surfing destinations because of its extensive coastline that offers a huge variety of locations to test your board on the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. This allows it to cater to both beginner and professional skill levels.

“Being the most southern territory on the continent puts South Africa on the route of the roaring 40s, which means that the country is one of the most consistent surfing areas in the world,” explains Nomad Surfers.

Here are 5 locations best known for surfing as recommended by South Africa Surf Tours:

Muizenberg – Cape Town

A 25-minute drive away from the CBD, this is an ideal location for both beginners and intermediate surfers because of its gentle waves. Furthermore, water temperatures are relatively warm, starting at 15 degrees Celsius and higher.

Jeffreys Bay – Gqeberha

Described as the mecca for South African surfers, the beach is best suited for advanced surfers looking for fast, powerful, and insanely long rides and is best to be surfed between May and August.

Plettenberg Bay – Garden Route

According to South African Nomads, Plettenberg Bay is a great spot along the Garden Route where you can easily mix surfing with relaxing.

The beach is central and is described as being ideal for beginners looking to perfect their skills and gain more experience.

“Lookout Beach and the waves at Robberg are more fun and challenging. In the waters around Plettenberg, there are plenty of seals, so they’ll probably keep their distance from you!” highlights the above-mentioned source.

Umhlanga Rocks

“The spot is known for its consistent beach breaks and warm water temperatures, usually between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, and the spot works on all tides. The surf spot provides both left and right waves,” explains Mondo Surf.

These are just a few of the top spots you can add to your travel list. Make this summer one to remember.
