Top 5 reasons why your child benefits more form experiences than toys

In a world where toy shelves are constantly filled with the latest trends, many parents are discovering that experiences offer longer-lasting value than material gifts. According to Banner Health, experiences greatly impact overall happiness more than material things. From family outings to cooking together or exploring nature, shared experiences help children develop essential life skills while creating cherished memories. Here are five reasons why experiences often have a greater impact than toys.

1. They create lasting memories

Unlike toys that may lose their appeal after a few weeks, experiences become treasured memories. Whether it’s a camping trip, a museum visit or a family picnic, children are more likely to remember meaningful moments spent with loved ones. As such, Psychology Today reports that research backs up the notion that parents should invest in activities over material goods.

2. They support healthy brain development

New experiences expose children to different environments, people and challenges. These opportunities stimulate curiosity, problem-solving and creativity, all of which contribute to cognitive development and lifelong learning.

3. They strengthen family bonds

Quality time together builds trust and emotional security. Activities such as baking, hiking or visiting local attractions encourage conversation, teamwork and stronger parent-child relationships, helping children feel valued and connected.

4. They build confidence and independence

Trying new activities encourages children to step outside their comfort zones. Whether learning to swim, visiting a wildlife reserve or participating in a community event, overcoming new challenges helps develop resilience, confidence and independence.

5. They encourage gratitude over possessions

Experiences teach children to value moments rather than material things. This shift in mindset can reduce the constant desire for new toys while fostering appreciation, empathy and emotional well-being.

While toys certainly have a place in childhood, experiences often provide richer developmental benefits that last well beyond the moment. By prioritising meaningful activities over material gifts, families can nurture happier, more confident children while creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.
