Attractions

1. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

With a vast array of plants, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is an absolute must on our list of things to do in Cape Town with kids, grandparents, friends, or even your dogs (if you follow the permitted dog walking paths).

Kirstenbosch hosts special events throughout the year, including art exhibitions, concerts and festivals, with the Summer Sunset Concerts being a firm favourite. For families, a day in the garden gives your kids some space to play in nature. Other attractions include an art exhibition featuring life-sized dinosaur sculptures and the ever-popular Tree Canopy Walkway, which leads visitors along a path raised above a canopy of trees with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains and garden. The garden makes the perfect setting for a family picnic. If preparing a family-sized spread is too daunting, order a pre-packed picnic online and pick it up at the Tea Room on arrival.

2. Two Oceans Aquarium

Enter a watery wonderland at the V&A Waterfront’s Two Oceans Aquarium, where children can learn all about the deep blue sea and the creatures that live in it. The aquarium offers an array of exhibitions, ocean life and interactive experiences for kids, making any visit a stimulating experience for young minds. Two Oceans is also a tremendous educational opportunity, offering children a chance to get up close and personal with some terrifying and misunderstood creatures, including sharks, stingrays and jellyfish, all while learning about conserving our seas.

3. Table Mountain Aerial Cableway

A journey to the top of the majestic Table Mountain is a must-do when in Cape Town, and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway offers exactly that thrilling experience. The whole family can be whisked up to the mountain’s peak, where an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the beautiful Cape Town cityscape awaits.

4. Cape Point Nature Reserve

Located at the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, the Cape Point Nature Reserve is another favourite among visitors to the city, offering a spectacular range of fauna and flora to admire. Apart from the exquisite ocean views and the variety of wildlife inhabiting the area, there is also no shortage of activities for children to enjoy.

The nature reserve hosts terrific hiking trails and tidal pools ideal for family swimming, making it a perfect option for a family day outdoors. Taking the Flying Dutchman funicular instead of walking uphill from the parking lot to see the historic lighthouse and breathtaking vistas is a bonus for the kids.

5. Iziko Museum

The world-renowned Iziko Museum offers a vast selection of artworks, artefacts and all kinds of animal exhibits. Children will love exploring this massive facility with its big displays, animal skeletons and relics from the past. In addition, several interactive quizzes and games are scattered throughout the museum that are sure to entertain and educate.
