Tired of rotten fruits and veg? Watch how to keep them fresher for longer

Fresh produce often goes off a lot quicker than anticipated. When this does happen, it is unfortunate that one often has to deal with the guilt of food waste.  Introducing a few steps, methods, and smart tricks in advance can extend the shelf life of your fresh produce, making it easier for you to enjoy for a longer time.

These effective ways will ensure that your fresh produce lasts longer and possibly save you a few coins now and again.

  • Utilise acidity

Food 24 states that using the juice that is present in lemons and oranges which is quite acidic can prevent your fruits from browning. The source further mentions, “The acid acts as a barrier against oxidation, keeping your produce looking and tasting fresh.” A squeeze of citrus juice over fruits such as apples, pears, or avocados can preserve them for longer. This applies to fresh produce such as halved avocados which often tend to go brown and seem a bit unappetizing when they oxidize.

  • Store in water

Some vegetables such as carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and even apples tend to survive best in moisture. According to Readers Digest, storing them in a container filled with water and sealing in the moisture can aid in preserving their freshness and preserve them for longer. The publication advises, “To avoid that dried-out look old carrots tend to get, first, chop off the leafy greens if you bought your carrots whole.”

  • Rinse with vinegar

Before placing your fresh berries into the fridge be sure to give them a soak in a vinegar water solution and allow them to sit. The above-mentioned source mentions that the vinegar and water mixture “disinfects against mould, which can lengthen the shelf life by weeks. Then rinse with water and dry thoroughly.”
