With children going back to school and the new academic year commencing. Parents are encouraged to motivate their children to enter the academic year on a positive note.
According to the Child Mind Institute, a website that focuses on ways to help children, if your child is suffering in school and does not appear to be motivated to try, the first thing you should do is figure out what is blocking him or her from progressing. Learning difficulties, social issues, attention problems, or emotional problems can all lead to academic disengagement in children.
However, not all children who do badly in school—not reaching their full potential—have a diagnosable condition. There are several things that parents may do to encourage their children to work more.
Here are some tips to motivate your child in 2024:
- Involve your child in the preparations: Try discussing and planning the back-to-school shopping list together, and allow children to be involved in what is happening at school.
- Address your anxieties and concerns: Openly share and validate your issues regarding education. This allows the children to learn to express themselves effectively.
- Celebrate accomplishments: Highlight prior achievements and establish attainable targets. For example, if they pass well in a certain subject, get them something they have always wanted; this ensures that they have something to work towards.
- Encourage friendship: Discuss prospective friendships and instill active listening and compassion.
- Pack a nice surprise: Include handwritten messages, inspirational comments, or gestures of affection.
- Organise meet-ups: Before school starts, plan play dates or get-togethers with classmates or friends.
- Attend back-to-school activities or orientations: Assist your child in adjusting to their new school environment.
