Tips for setting realistic New Year’s resolutions

by Staff Bona

With the new year just beginning, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what you want to achieve in 2026.

Many of us feel inspired to set fresh goals—whether it’s improving our health, advancing our careers, or finding more balance in everyday life.

However, turning these aspirations into lasting change requires more than just good intentions. To make your resolutions stick, it’s important to set realistic, achievable goals that suit your lifestyle.

Here are some practical tips to help you craft meaningful resolutions.

Reflect on the past

Before setting new goals, take some time to reflect on 2025. What worked well? What challenges did you face? Understanding your past experiences provides valuable insight into what is feasible and what might need adjustment.

Tailoring your resolutions to your personal circumstances will make them more meaningful and attainable.

Be specific and clear

Vague resolutions like “get fit” or “save money” can be difficult to measure and often lead to frustration.

Instead, specify what success looks like. For example, “walk 30 minutes every weekday” or “save R5,000 by June.” Clear goals provide direction and a sense of accomplishment as you track progress.

Set small, manageable steps

Large goals can be overwhelming, especially when balancing work, family, and community commitments.

Break your resolutions into smaller, manageable steps. For instance, if you aim to improve your diet, start by incorporating one additional vegetable daily rather than overhauling your entire eating plan overnight.

Be realistic about your resources

Consider the time, finances, and support systems available to you. If gym memberships are costly, explore free or low-cost alternatives like outdoor exercise or online fitness classes.

If your schedule is packed, prioritise small, consistent efforts over lengthy, infrequent sessions.

Focus on what you can control

Avoid setting resolutions based on external factors beyond your influence. Instead, concentrate on actions within your power.

For example, rather than resolving to “get a promotion,” focus on enhancing your skills or expanding your network.

Allow flexibility and forgiveness

Life can be unpredictable. Build flexibility into your goals and be kind to yourself if setbacks occur. Resolutions are about progress, not perfection.

Seek support and accountability

Enlist friends, family, or community groups to support your journey. Shared goals often lead to stronger commitments.

Whether it’s a workout buddy or a financial advisor, having someone to cheer you on makes a difference.
