TikTok-approved: 7 local spots worth the hype

Sometimes, the hype is real, and these destinations definitely fall under “sometimes”.

TikTok has changed the way we travel. What used to be the secret corners of South Africa are now trending spots on our “For You” pages. From misty waterfalls to tucked-away cafés, the viral reels and aesthetic montages are often right on the money. These are the destinations that live up to their digital fame, the ones that remind you why local travel still holds the best kind of magic.

1. Lisbon Falls, Mpumalanga

If there was ever a place made for slow-motion videos and misty lens flares, it is Lisbon Falls. Towering at ninety-four metres, this is one of the highest waterfalls in Mpumalanga, and TikTok users have been quick to showcase its cinematic beauty. The falls are located a short drive from Graskop, making them an easy stop on the Panorama Route. The best time to visit is in the early morning when the air is cool, the mist curls over the valley, and the sunlight catches the spray just right.

Travel tip: Pair your visit with a stop at God’s Window and Berlin Falls for a full day of waterfall chasing.

2. Dullstroom, Mpumalanga

There is a reason Dullstroom has gone viral for its cosy charm and misty mornings. This little highland town sits snugly between rolling hills and trout-filled dams, offering a mix of rustic comfort and small-town sophistication. TikTok clips of Dullstroom’s log fires, quaint coffee shops, and artisanal gin tastings have done the town justice. It is no surprise that the town’s aesthetic feeds have drawn travellers looking for tranquillity with a touch of luxury.

Travel tip: Try brunch at Mrs. Simpson’s Restaurant or a craft beer at Anvil Ale House, both beloved by locals and influencers alike.

3. Moonshine on Whiskey Creek, The Crags

Hidden between the forest canopies near Plettenberg Bay, Moonshine on Whiskey Creek is the kind of place you discover once and never forget. TikTok’s aerial views of wooden cabins perched above the trees hardly capture the full experience. This off-the-grid forest escape runs entirely on solar power, offering eco-conscious comfort surrounded by nature.

Travel tip: Book early, especially in summer. The secluded cabins fill up quickly thanks to their well-deserved and growing online fame.

4. Postcard Café, Stellenbosch

Few places have mastered the art of being both peaceful and photogenic like Postcard Café. Set on the Stark-Condé Wine Estate, this serene spot has earned its fame for the mirrored lake views that look like they have been painted into existence. TikTok travel accounts love it for the way the light hits the vineyards and the still water reflects the surrounding mountains.

Travel tip: Arrive just before lunchtime to secure a seat with a view. They fill up fast, especially on weekends.

5. Blyde River Canyon, Mpumalanga

A regular star on TikTok’s South African travel feed, Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon in the world and one of the most striking. Every post showcasing the emerald-green waters and dramatic cliffs seems to capture a new angle of this natural wonder. Yet, even those awe-inspiring drone shots cannot compare to standing at the edge of the viewpoint and feeling the scale of it all.

Travel tip: Visit at sunrise for the best light and fewer crowds. Bring binoculars for birdwatching, as the area is home to rare species like the Taita falcon.

6. Kampersrus, Limpopo

If TikTok has taught us anything, it is that the small places often hold the biggest surprises. Kampersrus, a quiet village at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains, has recently gained attention for its mountain views and close proximity to the Blyde River Canyon. It is a gateway to adventure without the crowds, a place you can use as a base and still access world-class scenery within minutes.

Nature enthusiasts will love exploring nearby hiking trails and visiting wildlife centres in Hoedspruit. Kampersrus feels untouched, almost like a secret shared through whispers, or in this case, short viral clips.

7. Sardinia Bay, Eastern Cape

White sand, turquoise waves, and wild coastal beauty make Sardinia Bay the kind of place that looks like it belongs in an island paradise reel. Located just outside Gqeberha, this beach has become a TikTok favourite for its untouched dunes and photogenic sunsets. It is part of a marine reserve, so there are no shops or crowds, just the sound of the surf and endless sea views. While swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, Sardinia Bay is perfect for long walks, horseback rides, and golden-hour shots.

The verdict

Sometimes, social media exaggerates or misrepresents things for the sake of the “aesthetic”. But these South African destinations prove that the buzz can be spot on, and TikTok has shone a well-deserved spotlight on the local gems that make travel feel special.
