This December, Thebe Magugu, one of South Africa’s brightest fashion stars, will bring his signature Afro-modernist aesthetic to Cape Town’s Mount Nelson Hotel, A Belmond Hotel, with the launch of his very first interior design project: the Thebe Magugu Suite.
Marking the tenth anniversary of his celebrated brand, the suite promises to be a transformative space where African culture, storytelling, and craftsmanship meet luxury hospitality.
A Suite of Stories and Heritage
Nestled along the Mount Nelson’s iconic Palm Avenue, the two-story suite is a celebration of African heritage and contemporary elegance. Guests will encounter ceremonial furniture, hand-carved details, and works by leading South African artists like Mmangaliso Nzuza, Lulama Wolf, and Trevor Stuurman.
Magugu describes his design approach as “Afro-English,” blending the refined sensibilities of British interiors with African cultural motifs. Stone and timber finishes, pleated textiles, and a custom wallpaper depicting Southern Africa’s dramatic landscapes set the tone for a luxurious yet soulful retreat.
Upstairs, a terrace opens onto breathtaking views of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head, while inside, subtle design touches—a Basotho hat-inspired pendant light and pottery-shaped furniture, pay homage to Magugu’s heritage.
Magugu House: A Cultural Hub
Alongside the suite, Magugu will launch Magugu House Cape Town, a hybrid boutique and cultural space that showcases his collections alongside rotating exhibitions. The inaugural display features works by acclaimed photographers and artists Zanele Muholi and Zizipho Poswa.
The space will also host salon-style events, screenings, and collaborations with emerging artists, making it a creative exchange hub in Cape Town and a new destination for both locals and visitors.
“I wanted to create a space that encapsulates our culture through art, craft and history, while still offering the comfort and gracious hospitality the Mount Nelson has been known for,” Magugu explains.
A Milestone for African Design
For Belmond, this marks the debut of its Designer Residence concept in Cape Town, following high-profile collaborations with creatives like Wes Anderson. For Magugu, it solidifies his status as a leading voice in African luxury and design, extending his influence beyond fashion and into immersive experiences.
As Cape Town welcomes the Thebe Magugu Suite, the city gains not just a luxury space, but a living gallery of African artistry, heritage, and storytelling, promising a transformative experience for guests and a fresh chapter in South African design.
