The ultimate guide to a fly-free festive table

Summer in South Africa is synonymous with al fresco dining, sizzling braais, and long, lazy lunches under sunny skies.

But let’s face it — nothing kills the vibe faster than an uninvited swarm of flies buzzing around your perfectly plated salads and juicy lamb chops.

We’ve rounded up a mix of creative ways to keep your festive table fly-free.

Lemon and clove

This timeless trick is as effective as it is fragrant. Cut a few lemons in half and stud them generously with whole cloves. The strong aroma acts as a natural fly repellent, while the setup adds a rustic charm to your table decor. Bonus: it smells heavenly.

Essential oils

Flies despise certain essential oils, making them your secret summer weapon. Add a few drops of lavender, eucalyptus, or citronella oil to a spray bottle filled with water and mist the area around your table. Alternatively, soak cotton balls in these oils and place them discreetly around the dining setup.

Fan them away

Flies hate wind —it’s like turbulence for their tiny wings. Position a small fan near your table to create a gentle breeze. Not only does this keep flies at bay, but it also provides a welcome reprieve from the summer heat. Alternatively, get your hands on fly fans!

Fly traps

Embrace your inner DIY enthusiast and craft some quirky fly traps. Fill glass bottles with a mix of apple cider vinegar and a touch of dish soap. Cover the opening with plastic wrap, poke a few holes, and place them at a safe distance from the food. Flies will be lured in by the vinegar and trapped by the soap’s magic.

Basil

Basil isn’t just for pesto — it’s a natural fly deterrent. Arrange fresh basil plants or bouquets around your table. The herb’s aromatic oils send flies packing while doubling as a stunning centrepiece.

Decorative nets and covers

Give your table a chic upgrade with food-safe mesh covers or colourful netting. These barriers protect your dishes without compromising style. Look for designs with festive prints to add a playful touch to your setup.

Light the way (strategically)

Flies are less active in darker spaces, so consider using yellow-tinted lighting around your table. The hue is less attractive to flies than bright white lights, reducing their presence as the sun sets on your soirée.
