Surprising uses of a steamer

Stop before relegating your clothing steamer to the hallway cupboard! The regular handheld steamer is actually a secret weapon within your home that can tackle everything from grimy kitchens to sticky messes.

We’re looking at 10 surprising uses of handheld steamers that’ll make it your new favourite cleaning gadget — plus tips to maximise its magic!

1. Sanitise countertops & high-touch surfaces

Your steamer isn’t just for fabric. According to The Maids, steam over 100°C kills bacteria on countertops, light switches, and doorknobs. Glide the nozzle 5–8 cm above surfaces to zap germs without harsh chemicals.

2. Degrease stovetops & oven racks

Say goodbye to scrubbing! Steam melts greasy build-up on cooker hoods, stovetops and even oven racks. Hold the steamer 3–5 cm away from grime, let the heat work for 30 seconds, then wipe clean. A great chemical-free kitchen hack!

3. Defrost freezers in minutes

Skip the hours-long thaw. Direct steam at icy freezer walls to loosen frost fast. Place towels to catch water, and avoid electrical components. Pro tip: Use the steamer afterwards to freshen fridge shelves!

4. Revive car interiors

Steam lifts crumbs from seats, removes sticky cup holder residue and deodorises upholstery. Avoid leather unless it’s heat-safe.

5. Streak-free windows & mirrors

Ditch the kitchen roll! Steam loosens dirt and evaporates quickly, leaving glass sparkling. Perfect for mirrors, shower doors or even picture frames. Among handheld steamer uses, this one’s a time-saver for spotless reflections.

6. Refresh mattresses & pillows

Kill dust mites and banish odours by steaming your mattress in sections, says Good Housekeeping. Hold the nozzle close (but not touching) the fabric, then vacuum afterwards. Repeat monthly for allergy relief!

7. Deodorise bathrooms

Blast steam into tile grout, shower curtains or bins to kill mould and mildew. Avoid painted surfaces.

8. Erase carpet stains & dents

Red wine spill? Steam the stain, then blot. For furniture dents, hover the steamer 15 cm above carpet fibres and fluff with a spoon.

9. Clean stuffed animals & pet beds

Sanitise plush toys or pet bedding without washing. Steam in sections, then vacuum fur and dander. Always test delicate fabrics first!

10. Remove stickers & tape residue

Stubborn price tags on glass? Steam softens glue instantly. Hold the nozzle 8 cm away, then scrape gently with a plastic card.

Pro tips for safe steaming

  • Use distilled water to prevent mineral build-up.
  • Test fabrics for colourfastness.
  • Avoid waxed, painted or delicate surfaces.

These handheld steamer uses prove it’s a must-have for homemakers. Ready to steam your way to a cleaner, fresher home?
