Starting a garden for small spaces

Gardening is a fun project to do during your holidays with your family, creating lifetime bonding memories by growing vegetables, herbs or plants.

Most people think that you would need to have a big garden in order to start the process of gardening. This is not the case as there are many things that you can use that are at your disposal.

According to SA Home Owners you have to follow a few steps before taking on a gardening project and here are simple steps for beginners:

  1. Plan -where are you going to do your gardening and what will you be planting?
  2. Do research – vegetables and other flowers are seasonal, so know exactly what you will plant and whether it is the permaculture way or whether you will use fertilizer.
  3.  Tools- shop for the right tools that you will need for beginners.
  4. Consider things like water and sunlight for your garden. Will your garden have enough natural sunlight? How and when will you be watering your garden?
  5. Start small. This is so that you can manage your garden well to a point where you are able to be in control of the outcome. Starting small is a great idea as it limits the amount of pressure on yourself and therefore you will not be overwhelmed.

Besides using land, you can recycle a few household items from your house, According to Gardening SA blog: “gardening is an art and it teaches people how to go with the flow, just like how accepting failures and successes is a learning curve.”
