Simple ways to stay warm when the cold weather hits

by Akhona Ndlela

We quickly notice the effects of the cold weather, including icy fingers, frosty toes and the dreaded chill that creeps in under your jacket just when you think you’re warm.

Staying warm can become a daily struggle, regardless of whether winter is severe where you live or you’re simply sensitive to colder temperatures.

Not everyone wants to see their energy bill rise in order to stay warm, or has access to powerful heating.

However, do not worry, there are many inexpensive, simple ways to stay warm, some of which are even enjoyable and cosy. When the temperature drops, these simple routines, from dressing appropriately to drinking something warm and cosy, can have a significant impact.

According to the British Red Cross, wear thick socks and slippers for indoor comfort, use a hot water bottle and layer up with insulating clothes like wool jumpers and thermal knickers to stay warm during the winter.

To improve circulation, continue to be active and move around. Wear insulating gloves made of leather or wool, waterproof shoes and socks outside, and thick socks and slippers indoors to keep your hands and feet warm. When tucked into gloves or clothing, use winter warmer packs similarly to hand warmers.

Bennet Read states that in order to let sunlight into your home and keep it warm throughout the winter, open your blinds or curtains as soon as you wake up. As soon as the sun sets, shut the windows and curtains to keep the warmth from escaping. For temperature control, use double curtain rails or thick, layered curtains, or replace your current curtains with thicker ones.

During the colder months, warmer flooring, like heated floor mats, can be useful. Examine your geyser, make sure it isn’t being overused, and cover it with a blanket, the above source also states.
