
According to the recent report compiled by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD) for the Household Affordability Index, certain foods are cheaper to buy in Cape Town than in Durban and Johannesburg.
The South African reports that the data used in the report was gathered from 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries that cater to the low-income market in cities including Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Springbok, and Pietermaritzburg.
The prices of these products in these regions are influenced by various factors that include transportation costs and local availability.
The prices of essential food items from Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg were compared with one another in the report to highlight the price differences.
These food items included white sugar (10kg), cooking oil (5l), salt (1kg) and margarine (1kg).
Out of the four essential food items, Cape Town had the cheapest cooking oil, salt and margarine prices, at R143.10, R10.72 and R38.07 respectively.
Meat products that appeared in the report were chicken feet (2kg), gizzards (2kg), chicken livers (2kg), beef (2kg), wors (2kg) and beef tripe (2kg).
When the prices of meat were compared in the report, Cape Town had the cheapest options each time.
Chicken feet were priced at R42.73, gizzards were priced at R81.41 and chicken livers were priced at R69.23. Beef was priced at R159.97, wors was priced at R95.48 and beef tripe was priced at R84.65.
Other food items that are cheaper in Cape Town that appeared in the report included bananas, spinach and butternut.
