Quick and easy solutions to stop door squeaks

A squeaky door can be a constant annoyance. While applying lubrication may quiet a squeaky door temporarily, the need for repeated lubrication is a clear indication that something is wrong. Don’t ignore these signs; instead, learn how to fix a squeaky door so you can handle the repair yourself.

Ways to fix a squeaky door

Door components can fail in various ways, leading to squeaky doors. Typically, a squeaky door indicates that it is hanging crookedly in the frame due to misaligned framing or rotted wood. There are, however, quick fixes you can try to sort the issues out without having to buy a new door.

Olive oil

You might think your kitchen products wouldn’t be much help outside the kitchen, but olive oil has other uses around your house. If you don’t have time to run to the hardware store, head to your kitchen pantry instead. Olive oil works wonderfully to silence squeaky door hinges. To minimise the mess, use an oil can or a small syringe to apply to the door hinges. The olive oil will penetrate the hinge, but sliding the hinge pin out slightly will help penetrate it faster.

Lithium grease

Lithium grease lasts longer than most door sprays. Used as a door hinge lubricant, it can generally get messier to apply. For optimal results, apply the lithium grease to the door hinge pin. The grease will help lubricate the pin while preventing rust from forming on the metal. You can use other DIY alternatives, but lithium grease lasts longer on the hinges without drying out.

Use petroleum jelly

Vaseline, as most South Africans know it, is another squeaky door solution you may find in your home cabinets. Because petroleum jelly lacks any penetrating power, removing the hinge pin, then coating it with a thin layer of petroleum jelly before reinstalling, is the best solution for the vaseline to work on your doors.

Hairspray

Although not the best long-lasting method, hairspray is an alternative to a spray lubricant that can be applied by spraying onto the hinges. The hairspray acts as a lubricant to help the hinges move freely around the hinge pin without making a sound. Quick fix before you get the more effective lubricants.
