Okra is easy to grow and packed with benefits

by Staff Bona

Okra has become a sensation due to its health benefits and versatility in meals, from incorporating it in vegetable stews, meaty meals, and infusing it in water.

It is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in warm weather conditions. This fibre-rich food is a boon for the digestive system, potentially warding off constipation and even reducing colorectal cancer risk with its multiple anti-oxidant properties.

Culinary chameleon

Okra is a diverse vegetable that can be incorporated into meaty dishes, fried, and even stewed. This vegetable can transform basic dishes into mouth-watering dishes. Multiple innovative dishes are possible with okra, like curried okra fries and okra chickpea tangy tomato sauce, and pickled and grilled varieties, which can add a zesty twist to any dish.

Pollinator magnate

Growing okra in your garden is beneficial as it invites beneficial insects. Its pale yellow flowers with red inner rings in the petals produce a nectar loved by bees and butterflies, turning your garden into a buzzing hub of activity.  These winged visitors are crucial for cross-pollination, which not only benefits your okra crop but also supports a diverse ecosystem.

Okra enriches both the environment and the nutrients on your plate. It is more than just a nutritious vegetable. It is a bridge between biodiversity and nutrition as it is food for beneficial insects like bees and butterflies while allowing them to continue nature’s work of pollinating plants in the garden.

Whether you’re simmering it in a stew, pickling it for a tangy bite, or growing it to attract bees and butterflies, okra enriches both your plate and your environment. Perhaps one of the most surprising benefits of okra is maintaining community connection with its versatility and opportunity to share innovative, mouthwatering, and delicious recipes.
