There’s a saying that says “Life is about the little things”, it means that focusing more on the small moments that bring you joy is important and allows you to live your life to the fullest.

These little moments are called micro joys and they are the key to living a more peaceful and positive life if you make the most of them.

The online magazine for mental health and wellbeing, Happiful, formally defines micro joys as those brief moments of happiness that are frequently missed or taken for granted in everyday and ordinary parts of life. “This might be your first cup of tea in the morning, a stranger smiling at you unexpectedly, or the fulfilment that comes from finishing a task on your to-do list.” These moments might seem insignificant but the publication above believes that each one of them can greatly improve your attitude.

The online magazine states that according to some specialists, appreciating these small moments of joy has been linked to improved physical and mental health, including lowered stress levels and an enhanced immune system. It may even help us live longer.

The Conversation online publication claims that looking for little happy moments throughout the day might cause physical changes in the body, particularly in the nervous system. additionally, the publication states that micro joys may help prevent the damaging effects of long-term stress on our health, including elevated blood pressure, gastrointestinal problems, and hormone imbalances. “They may also result in positivity resonance or a “momentary connection between people” that enhances well-being, lengthens life, and contributes to a sense of purpose in our existence.”

Here are some ways to embrace the little moments and live a happier life.

Be thankful: Integrative Couples Psychotherapist, Ray Cruise of the Counselling Directory claims that it’s not necessary to wait for significant achievements or dramatic gestures to practise gratitude. He urges people to begin by observing the small details in their daily environment that make them happy. In his article titled Simple Tips to Improve Happiness, he said, “One essential tip for finding joy in your day-to-day life is practising gratitude. By taking time each day to reflect on the things you’re grateful for, whether big or small, you’ll start to appreciate all the good things around you.”  This may be the taste of your favourite meal, the smell of fresh flowers, the sound of birds tweeting, or the warmth of the sun on your skin, he suggests.

Be mindful of your feelings: Happiful also suggests that you should observe your emotions throughout the day, noticing when you feel happy, energized, or calm. it is advised that you reflect on your experiences, such as quiet moments, relaxing baths, or family chats, to understand what positively impacts your mood and well-being.

Have a joy diary: According to the online magazine above, one must keep a joy book to record any happy events along with the circumstances behind them. “You’ll eventually begin to see trends that will enable you to pinpoint your micro joys. ” The publication further states that maintaining a journal of these happy times might help you develop emotional resilience, which will make it easier for you to recover from difficult situations.

Be happy for others: It is also suggested that as you hear about other people’s happiness, ask about their accomplishments. According to Happiful, this shows that you genuinely care about their happiness, which not only strengthens your bond but also produces happy memories for you.
