Looking to enjoy your weekend in an awesome atmosphere? Try these markets in Pretoria

There are two types of market-goers. The first is the early birds, who grab their coffees at the market after running a 10k. They strut around in their activewear, making those of us in the second category feel slightly guilty for tucking into a waffle. The latter type of marketeer rises nowhere before 9 am on a weekend, and the market brunch is a solid tradition before a lazy morning of strolling around.

Either way, craft and food markets are a happy conglomeration of everything for everyone. They have a laid-back vibe, food that you can’t find anywhere else, and locally-made products with a personal touch.

Here are five of our favourite weekend markets in Pretoria for the Gautengers in need of a break this weekend.

1. Irene Village Market

This arts and crafts market on the Sunlawns Estate offers everything from handmade jewellery and soap-on-a-rope, to live entertainment under the trees. They are open every first and last Saturday of the month, and they’re dog-friendly!

2. Pretoria Boeremark

Fresh produce, jams, and bread will greet you at this farmer’s market. Think traditional Afrikaans food: koeksisters, milk tart and ‘melkkos’. They are open every Saturday and are dog-friendly too.

3. Market@theSheds

If you’re more of a city dweller, this urban market is the trendiest place to be. Expect fashion and design products, local musicians, and beautifully crafted drinks. Entrance is R50 before 2 pm and R100 thereafter. They are usually open on the first Saturday of the month but contact them to make sure.

Where: 387 Helen Joseph St, Arcadia

When: First Saturday of the month | 11:00 – 20:00

4. Cowhouse Market

If you’re looking for things to do in Pretoria, this market is the perfect spot for you. It offers mountain bike and running trails for your fitness fix and welcomes furry friends too. This market is perfect for those who love to keep active. Open every Saturday and Sunday.

Where: Ridge Rd, Hazeldean,

When: Saturday – Sunday | 9:00 – 16:00

5. Lavender Kontrei Market

More South African goodness at this market in Pretoria. Craft beer, and gin, and locally hand-crafted items with a variety of food stalls make this market super popular. There is also free kids’ entertainment like tractor and quad trailer rides, and a MyRun event for all ages every weekend. Open every Saturday.
