Big news for coffee and food lovers in South Africa — Pret A Manger, the famous UK-based coffee and food-to-go chain, is debuting in Johannesburg.

Mark your calendars for 14 February 2025, when the brand’s first store on the African continent will open in the vibrant Melrose Arch precinct.

A taste of South Africa with a global twist

Pret A Manger, which started in London in 1986, has become a go-to spot for fresh, high-quality food and coffee on the move. With over 700 outlets worldwide, the brand is now stepping into its 20th international market. Partnering with South Africa’s Millat Group through a licensing agreement signed in early 2024, Pret is all set to bring its signature style to Joburg—with a local twist.

The Melrose Arch store will serve Pret’s well-loved offerings while also featuring South African-inspired options. Expect tasty additions like soutvleis sandwiches and braaibroodjie toasties, blending Pret’s signature quality with local flavours.

Why Johannesburg?

For Pret A Manger CEO Pano Christou, choosing Johannesburg as the brand’s first South African location was an easy decision.

“South Africa’s dynamic food culture and vibrant community made Johannesburg the perfect location for our first shop on the continent. We’re thrilled to bring a touch of Pret to this incredible city while incorporating South African flavours into our menu,” he said.

Johannesburg is already home to a buzzing coffee scene, with established brands like Seattle Coffee Company, Vida e Caffè, Paul, and Starbucks, as well as popular independent cafés like The Grind Coffee Company and Hello Sunshine. Pret’s arrival adds another exciting option for Joburg’s coffee enthusiasts and food lovers.

A Global brand with big plans

Pret A Manger has been on a major expansion drive in recent years, setting its sights on doubling its business by 2026. The company has already surpassed expectations, reaching its growth target ahead of schedule in 2024. Currently, 25% of its sales come from international markets, with stores in the US, France, UAE, Hong Kong, India, and more.

The brand’s South African launch comes just weeks after it announced plans to open in Cyprus, showing no signs of slowing down. With its global reputation for fresh, convenient food and ethically sourced coffee, Pret A Manger is set to become a welcome addition to South Africa’s thriving café culture.

For Joburg locals and visitors alike, this February launch is something to look forward to—whether you’re grabbing a quick coffee or tucking into a South African-inspired Pret meal.
